A 20th century Fernandina Beach building is grabbing the attention of city leaders and could become the new city hall.
City leaders along with Florida Senator Bill Nelson say the historic post office on Centre Street isn’t being utilized to its fullest potential.
“We are just trying to find ways to get ahold of it,” said Dale Martin, Fernandina Beach city manager.
Martin said the city would like the building to be the new “city hall.” “The commission thought for several years that it would be a great repurposing of a governmental building to serve the function of a renovated city hall,” Martin said.
He said this would ensure the upper levels are in use and would consolidate city government employees to one location.
For years, Nelson has pushed to preserve this structure.
Construction was underway and workers completed the project about four months ago.
Nelson said he hopes the post office does one of two things.
“I want to see them sell the building or give the old post office building to the city of Fernandina Beach, and they can use it as their city hall,” Nelson said.
