JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office incident report identifies the woman shot to death by an officer late Tuesday in Arlington as Asia Marie Bennett, 22.
A Jacksonville officer said she gave Bennett multiple orders to drop the kitchen knife she was holding after JSO was called to the home for a domestic dispute between Bennett and her boyfriend.
The incident occurred at about 10:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of Westdale Drive. The first officer who arrived at the scene said she was approached by the boyfriend who told her that his girlfriend was in the house armed with a knife, JSO said.
Bennett then came outside with multiple items in her hands and the officer ordered her to drop everything. Bennett dropped some of the items but continued holding onto a large kitchen knife, JSO said.
Bennett refused to drop the knife and advanced towards the officer and was shot, JSO said. She continued advancing, not complying with orders to drop the knife, and was shot a second time.
She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Bennett arrested in April
JSO said at a news conference Wednesday morning that Bennett was arrested in April on felony battery charges during an incident with her boyfriend.
Action News Jax obtained the incident report of that arrest which states Bennett and her boyfriend lived together for multiple years. An officer was dispatched to the home at 1:18 a.m. on April 9 and observed him with bite marks on his head, throat and arms, the report states.
He told the officer Bennett would not allow him to leave the home saying that she repeatedly stands between him and the door refusing to let him exit.
“The victim further provided a video recorded on his cellphone on which the suspect can be seen standing between the door and victim,” the officer states in the report. “As the victim repeatedly begged to leave the home, the suspect can be seen forcibly pulling the victim back into the home.”
