A 400-acre wildfire is burning across the Georgia and Florida state line south of Fargo, drawing a multi-agency response. Ground and aerial crews are battling the blaze near Georgia Highway 94 and Florida Highway 2.
According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, no homes are currently threatened by the fire. However, officials expect a large plume of smoke to impact Waycross and surrounding communities throughout the region.
The suppression effort involves a partnership between several state and federal organizations. Responding teams include the Georgia Forestry Commission, the Florida Forest Service, the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These crews are currently using a combination of ground and aerial resources to manage the fire’s growth.
Residents in the impacted areas should prepare for significant smoke. Officials warned that a large plume is moving toward Waycross and could cause reduced visibility for drivers. Local authorities are asking the public to follow all instructions regarding road closures and safety protocols.
