JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An interrogation video of a former Jacksonville sheriff’s officer accused of beating a handcuffed woman shows him becoming emotional.
Akinyemi Borisade appears to show signs of regret in the video, which was released Thursday.
Borisade is accused of beating a woman, Mayra Martinez, during an arrest. Two videos appear to show the beating of a handcuffed woman. The arrest report said she bit and kicked Borisade before she was processed into jail.
Action News Jax is hearing for the first time from Borisade, who cried during questioning.
Borisade said in an interview after he was taken into custody that he was trying to arrest Martinez after she was fired from her job and wouldn’t listen to officers' demands to leave. He said that’s what led to punches.
“I feel either way it would have looked bad because I’m a guy and she’s a girl,” Borisade said. “I could have handled it differently.
“She yells. She charges towards me, and that’s when I put my hands on her shoulders, right here, and got her back to the wall where the door is. And that’s when the incident took place as far as her kicking me.”
Borisade said he thought that if he had walked away, it would send a message to Martinez that it was OK to attack officers. He said he felt that he had no other choice.
“If I would have (taken) her down to the ground, she would have landed on her hands. She wouldn’t have been able to catch herself. She would have landed on her face, and that would have looked really bad on camera just like what I did looks bad on camera.,” Borisade said.
The State Attorney's Office decided not to press felony charges in the case. The prosecutor in this case said there isn't enough to bring a felony charge against Borisade. However, Martinez's lawyer wants a special prosecutor to take over the case.
Borisade is charged with misdemeanor battery. His attorney entered a not guilty plea on his behalf this week in court.
Borisade was hired by the Sheriff’s Office in March 2015 but no longer works there.
