Four homes were boarded up Easter Sunday after a fire at a Jacksonville apartment complex.
Video showed flames and smoke coming from the roof of a building at The Fountains at Deerwood Saturday as firefighters fought the fire.
“Saw about 15 just here – first responders, fire trucks, ambulances, all of the above,” said Naomi Sepulveda, who lives at the complex. “When you got on Southside, you saw an entire row of them.”
The fire started in the attic. Jacksonville Fire Rescue quickly got the fire under control, a spokespesron said.
“Within seconds we heard the sirens, we saw the fire, then it was gone,” Sepulveda said.
JFRD shared video of a dog being reunited with its family after it was rescued from one of the units.
“When they actually busted open with the dog – it was so sweet. We all wanted to clap,” said Natalie Conrad, who also lives at the complex.
She said she got an email from the apartment complex asking everyone to be on the lookout for a cat that is still missing.
“I think the cat has special needs. He needs shots and medication,” Conrad said. "We're all going to be kind of looking around for the cat in the neighborhood."
Neighbors said they’re thankful to first responders for getting to the fire so quickly.
“Very, very thankful to the first responders who came out that fast. Within seconds we heard the siren, we saw the fire -- then it was gone,” Sepulveda said.
She said she’s going to be more careful after seeing four homes damaged by fire.
“You always think that, you know, 'It can’t be me.' But when it happens this close to home, you start to think differently,” she said.
Neighbors said they want to start a fund to help the families who lost their homes.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
