Jacksonville honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ahead of MLK Day

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — All weekend long the city of Jacksonville is honoring Martin Luther King Jr.  Neighbors paid tribute to the American Minister and iconic activist in more than one way.

That’s the theme for this years, Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration in Jax Beach

“Equality for all mankind and not just a particular race or for rich or for poor. As he said in his I have a dream speech, when black men, white men, Jews and gentile come together we can make a better world,” says Willie Mclaurin.

Guest speaker and Council Member Rory Diamond says part of making Jacksonville a better place means finding ways to lower our crime rates. He said, “Jacksonville has had a very tough year.”

“I don’t even know where to begin,” says Leah Sherman-Ford. “I’m glad we’re celebrating him today.”

Locals at Jax beach weren’t the only ones to pay homage to Dr. King. So, did locals over in New Town who put together a day of service where they helped to clean up New Town Urban Farmacy as well as harvest fresh produce like beets.

Florida House Representative Angie Nixon and Wealth Watchers Manager Hurtis Wyche says it’s all to help with our city’s food insecurity.

“We teach classes on how to grow food, harvest the food and the health benefits behind it,” says Curtis Wyche.

“Martin Luther King and his legacy that he had for uplifting the community, this community garden seeks to do just that,” says Angie Nixon.

Jacksonville will continue honoring Dr. King this Monday on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a parade at The Federal Bank of America in downtown Jax.
