A toddler was killed after he was hit during a gun battle between two men in a Jacksonville home, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Conner Mickens, 3, was shot on Oct. 19 when Brian Littles, 22, broke into a home on Broadway Avenue. Littles had bought a handgun specifically to shoot his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, JSO said.

When Little entered a bedroom, JSO said he fired at the bed. Inside the room were three people: His ex-girlfriend, another man, and Conner. The man armed himself with a gun and returned fire at Littles, police said.

During the exchange, Conner and Conner's mother were both hit. His mother sustained a wound to the leg, Conner was hit in the head, police said.

Conner died days later. On Thursday, Littles was officially charged with Conner's murder.
