Jacksonville Turns 200: Duval County is formed

On August 12, 1822, Duval County was carved out of St. Johns County.

It was named for William Pope Duval, who was governor of the Florida territory from 1822 to 1834.

It stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Suwannee River.
