JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville woman is recovering after she said she was bitten by a rattlesnake at her home. Now the woman’s friend is warning people about the number of snakes in the area this time of year.
It has taken two anti-venom treatments, but Amy Pasquarelli said her friend is recovering in the hospital after being bitten by a diamondback rattlesnake while walking from her porch.
"Stepped down on the ground and got bit. She must have surprised the snake because she didn't hear it rattle or anything. I think they were both really surprised," Pasquarelli said.
Pasquarelli said this happened in the Spring Hammock area. She said her friend remained calm after the snake struck.
“It's real scary, but she stayed really calm, which is surprising,” Pasquarelli said.
Snake catchers from Quick Catch said this is the time of year where you see the most snakes before they go into hibernation in the fall.
Pasquarelli sent Action News Jax pictures of a diamondback rattlesnake she spotted at Huguenot Park.
"It was very scary, very scary. We actually stopped at the gate and told the park ranger we saw it,” Pasquarelli said.
The snake catcher said they have been getting several calls about the reptiles in all areas with all the rain recently.
"They burrow into the ground and it floods their homes out, and they are all coming out and trying to fatten up before they hibernate," Pasquarelli said.
Pasquarelli said she takes extra precautions this time of year to avoid getting bit.
"Gardening, feeding the animals, we are real careful. We pay attention to where we are stepping and make a lot of noise," Pasquarelli said.
