JSO: Jacksonville woman told 911 she shot man who broke into apartment

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Neighbors are on edge after a woman reportedly told 911 she shot an intruder in their apartment complex.

It happened at Mission Springs Apartments in Jacksonville’s Ortega Farms neighborhood.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said officers found a man’s body lying near the master bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds.

“When I pulled up this morning, my heart dropped,” said neighbor Laurice Barcous. “My daughter, I was talking to her and her fiancé. I said, ‘You guys got to move.’ You know, it’s just too close to home.”

JSO said multiple people called 911 after hearing the gunfire around midnight.

One of those 911 calls reportedly came from a woman who identified herself as the shooter.

“It is scary. You never know when something like this can happen to you,” said Jay Rodriguez, who said he’s lived at Mission Springs Apartments with his wife and children for three years.

Action News Jax asked if the woman knew the intruder she told them she shot or if he was a stranger.

JSO is not answering that question for now, saying it’s an active investigation.

Barcous described the crime scene as déjà vu. She said her cousin was shot to death in this same apartment complex in Feb. 2017.

“It makes me wonder, was this something that could have been linked to him? I mean, to my knowledge, no one has ever been charged with his murder,” said Barcous.

In March 2017, two men reportedly broke into another woman’s apartment at Mission Springs Apartments and held her at gun point while they robbed her.

A JSO crime map shows there have been nine crimes reported within half a mile of the complex in the past month, including an armed robbery, three assaults and two burglaries.
