Jacksonville woman strikes gold, wins $5 million on scratch-off game

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Duval County woman is a millionaire after purchasing a winning scratch-off at a local gas station.

The Florida Lottery said Flores Merlo, 56, claimed a $5 million top prize from the game Gold Rush Classic. Merlo chose to receive her winnings as a one-time, lump-sum payment of $3,550,000.00.

Merlo reportedly bought the winning ticket from BP Food Store on San Jose Blvd. The store will receive a $10,000 bonus commission for selling the winning ticket.

Scratch-off games are approximately 75 percent of all ticket sales and generated more than $1.3 billion for the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund last year, according to the Florida Lottery.
