JAXPORT secures funding for its power line raising project

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The Jacksonville City Council awarded JAXPORT with a $10 million grant to go toward the project that would raise the power lines near JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal. The city is also providing a $12.5 million loan and a $5 million bridge loan that will be paid back by the port. This funding comes on top of the $22.5 million grant by the Florida Department of Transportation, back in December.

The project would increase the operational air draft clearance on the power lines near the Blount Island Terminal from 175 feet to 205 feet, in an effort to bring in larger ships. JAXPORT says this project, along with the harbor deepening project that was completed in May 2022, will create and protect 15,000 jobs.

JAXPORT is working with JEA to finalize an agreement that would outline the next steps in the power line project. Construction is expected to begin in 2024 and be completed in 2026.
