JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A retired substitute teacher from Jacksonville submitted two entries a day and still doubted when an email she received said she had won a $1.3 million home from HGTV.
“I didn’t believe it at first,” said Karen Hiers, 77, who lives with her husband, Bill, of 55 years.
But it was true. The Hiers are now proud owners of a 3,000-square-foot fully-furnished HGTV smart home home in Orlando they can share with their two children, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
They can also spend $100,000 in cash the couple received as part of the HGTV giveaway.

Karen had made entering HGTV giveaways part of her daily routine for years, entering twice daily every day of the sweepstakes period .She was randomly selected from more than 75 million entries.
When the email arrived notifying her that she was the lucky winner, she initially suspected it was a scam and enlisted her son’s help to verify the message was legitimate.
