JIA upgrading baggage check machines, will be twice as fast

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — You'll see new pieces of equipment when flying out of Jacksonville International Airport on Tuesday if you plan to check your baggage.

New baggage check machines will be installed at JIA over the weekend.

Michael Stewart is the director of external affairs for the Jacksonville Aviation Authority.

"The new machines are more efficient – the technology has improved greatly," Stewart said.

He says the machines you're used to seeing are 10 years old and were in need of an upgrade.

The upgrades cost $19 million, which is mostly funded by the Transportation Security Administration.

"The new machines -- a bag passes through without stopping; it's twice as fast," Stewart said.

A man was arrested in July and investigators say he and others smuggled drugs on board commercial airplanes through checked bags.

Airport leaders say while quicker, these new machines will still catch things of that nature.

What you can and can't bring on board, or put in your checked baggage, won't change.

The airport has to go through some upgrades. The entire system will be fully implemented in less than one year. There will be no changes to checking your bag at the curb.
