John Delaney named interim president of Flagler College

Jacksonville, Fl — Former University of North Florida President John Delaney has been appointed interim president of Flagler College, beginning next July.

Delaney served as UNF president for 15 years and, before that, was Mayor of Jacksonville for eight years.

“I’m confident that Mr. Delaney’s background and career experiences will allow him to continue the forward momentum of the College,” said Rick Groux, Chair of the Board of Trustees and a 1979 alumnus of Flagler.

Delaney’s appointment will allow the Flagler College Board Presidential Search Committee the time to do a national search for a new president. Joseph Joyner announced his retirement in November and will step down at the end of the 2020-2021 academic year.

“Flagler College is a national gem and with its gorgeous historic buildings, has to be one of the prettiest campuses in the country,” Delaney said.

Prior to his background in higher education, he served as the Chief Assistant State Attorney and General Counsel for the City of Jacksonville. He is a presently a shareholder at Rogers Towers Law firm and a Principal of The Fiorentino Group, a government affairs and business development firm.

Delaney tells WOKV he is not seeking the position full time.
