JSO investigating suspicious death at Kings Trail apartments

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said Tuesday investigators suspect foul play led to a death at a Southside apartment complex.

Action News Jax first told you Monday night the homicide unit was out at Kings Trail apartments on Toledo Road.

At the time, JSO would not confirm whether someone was dead.

Action News Jax’s crew saw police putting a man in handcuffs into the back of a squad car at the scene Monday night, but JSO said no arrests have been made.

On Tuesday, a building by the pool was still blocked off with caution tape. Officers were removing cardboard boxes filled with items from an apartment unit.

A sign at the complex’s entrance shows it is part of JSO’s Safe Housing Program. Right next to it, there’s a neighborhood watch sign.

“I hope they find out who did it and catch that person,” said Amanda Fegen, who lives at the complex.

Leon Schomberg, who has lived there for 10 years, said he’s sick of the violence.

“Since they took down the basketball courts, there’s nothing for the kids to do,” said Schomberg. “They need something positive to do. You know, there’s nothing positive around. That’s where negative comes.”

Several people asked Action News Jax reporter Jenna Bourne on Twitter whether this investigation is related to the Lonzie Barton investigation, since the complex is 1 1/2 miles from where 21-month-old Lonzie was last seen. JSO spokesperson Officer Melissa Bujeda said it's not related.
