ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The king and queen of Spain could be making a trip to St. Augustine to help the nation's oldest city celebrate its 450th anniversary.
City leaders traveled to Spain for this year's U.S.-Spain Council Summit.
Leaders there announced next year's summit will be held in St. Augustine, which means a possible royal visit from King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
St. Augustine will be the smallest city ever to host the international summit which will bring world leaders to Northeast Florida.
Mayor Joe Boles said the city is ready for the influx of visitors.
"We had the 'Gentlemen of the Road Tour' with people outside of town but we won't have to do that this time. This is not going to be any bigger than our average Fourth of July," said Boles.
With the 450th Commemoration about a year away, a visit from the Spanish monarchy will only validate the important anniversary.
Leaders hope the royal visit will take place Sept. 8, which coincides with the official founding of the City of St. Augustine.
