NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A local sailor at Kings Bay is on a ventilator after he was shot while trying to break up a fight, according to our affiliate WSVN.
29-year-old Anthon Adams is a sailor on his second enlistment in the Navy. But his life nearly came to an end outside his mother's North Lauderdale apartment on Thanksgiving night.
His mother Sandra Adams recalled the moments before he was shot. "We had dinner earlier, laughing and playing."
Later that night Adams was shot three times as he tried to break up a fight at his mother's apartment complex. His family says even after he was shot, his biggest concern was for the safety of his family. A relative and his two daughters, ages 8 and 9, were outside with him at the time.
"Even when he got shot he told them to come upstairs, he rushed them 'get up, get upstairs.' And he's like 'is this really happening, is this really happening to me?' He says 'is this real?'" said Adams.
Anthon Adams is a sonar technician and works on Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in St. Marys. He traveled to South Florida to see his daughters and be with family for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Doctors now have him on a ventilator at Broward Health North where he is listed in critical condition.
Adams' shooter has not been found.
"Well hoping that he come back out the same person when he went down," said his mother. "I hope they catch them people."
