ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — A pregnant woman is speaking exclusively to Action News Jax about her boyfriend, who was hit and killed after beating her.
David Cooley was hit by two cars on State Road 16 in St. Johns County Wednesday night, just steps away from where he lived with girlfriend Andrea McDade.
McDade told deputies Cooley was drunk when he pushed her into a bathtub and choked her until her vision turned black because she refused to give him money for weed.
"I just kept saying that this isn't him, he's not in his right mind right now. We'll be fine in an hour," said McDade.
Less than an hour later, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said he stabbed his friend in the arm and cut him on the back with a knife.
As he ran from the house, he was hit by two cars and killed.
"That actually was the first thing my son said, that it was instant karma," said McDade's mother, Melinda Newell.
A Sheriff's Office spokesman said deputies were able to identify Cooley's body using his mugshot from an arrest when he was a juvenile.
Cooley was an aspiring rapper who performed under the name Kid Cooley.
"He had social anxiety, so he was able to express himself better when he wrote music," said McDade.
She said Cooley had never been violent with her before, although her mother told a different story.
"He has," said Newell. "I'm actually glad that part of her life is over."
"I'm not mad at him for what happened and I wish that he was still here," said McDade.
McDade's baby boy is due this month, and she said she plans to name him after his father.
