Miami Air Boeing 737 moved from NAS Jax to Green Cove Springs

Mobro Marine, a local marine equipment company, moved Miami Flight 293 from NAS Jax to Reynolds Park in the Clay County Port Wednesday morning.

The sight brought a number of spectators out in Green Cove Springs to catch a glimpse of the 737-800 floating on a barge in the St. Johns River where it skidded of the runway at NAS Jax.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission also assisted in the transport.

“Nice day to see an airplane going up and down the river,” said neighbor Craig Brooker.

The plane was loaded onto a barge with cranes, and pulled by tugboats belonging to the marine equipment company.

Sky Action News Jax followed the barge as it passed under the Buckman Bridge Wednesday morning.

The National Transportation Safety Board investigators told Action News Jax over the weekend it was important to keep the plane intact to preserve perishable evidence.

Mobro Marine Chief Financial Officer Steve Cumella tells us they were able to do so Wednesday.

“Mobro Marine’s job was to actually go in and lift and transport the plane,” said Cumella.

Cumella tells Action News Jax the company took three barges, two cranes and three tugboats to NAS Jax to move the plane south to Clay County.

He says the plane will be offloaded in a day or so to a secure location where investigators can continue their search for answers. The NTSB tells Action News Jax investigators will have the ability to take a closer look at the plane, as they piece together why it crash-landed on Friday night.

“NTSB will, I’m sure, have to do their research and their investigation before they allow anything to happen to the plane,” he said.

Investigators say they’ve recovered the plane’s cockpit voice recorder, and tell us it could have many of the answers they’re seeking.
