More Duval County schools change toilet paper practices after Action News Jax story

More Duval County parents are coming forward to Action News Jax, saying there is no toilet paper in the stalls at their kids’ schools.

Action News Jax first reported Friday that teachers at Carter G. Woodson Elementary were handing out wads of toilet paper to individual students as needed, instead of keeping toilet paper in the bathrooms.

Since then, parents at Brentwood Elementary School and Lake Shore Middle School have told us their kids don’t have toilet paper in the stalls, either.

It’s a practice that Duval County Public Schools’ spokesperson Laureen Ricks said is “not encouraged,” but there didn’t seem to be any enforcement until Action News Jax started asking questions.

Half an hour after Action News Jax’s original story aired on Friday, Ricks called our newsroom to say toilet paper had been returned to the stalls at Carter G. Woodson Elementary.

Khambriel Nance said she doesn’t agree with what’s happening at her niece and nephew’s school, Brentwood Elementary.

“I don’t like it,” Nance said. “I think it’s very, just, out of control.”

When Action News Jax asked Ricks about Brentwood Elementary and Lake Shore Middle, she emailed that, “Your email has been forwarded to the district and school leaders to ensure there is consistency district-wide.”

She also reiterated the practice was “a result of misuse or waste.”

When Action News Jax asked Friday how many schools in Duval County were withholding toilet paper from bathroom stalls, Ricks said there was no way to track the practice because it’s not district protocol.
