JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Naval Air Station Jacksonville returned to normal operations Friday after a suspicious piece of luggage at the base air terminal prompted a security response and evacuation of the area.

NAS Jacksonville Security Forces and a Military Working Dog responded to the luggage at about 7:30 a.m., base officials said.

As a precaution, personnel in the area were evacuated while Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 6 Detachment Mayport and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigated.

Base officials told Action News Jax just before 9 a.m. that all gates to the base remained open and that personnel were being asked to avoid the area around the air terminal.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

NAS Jax officials said its security team followed all established protocols throughout the response and “takes all potential threats seriously.”
