Nassau County homeowners want more mosquito control

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Parts of Nassau County are going without mosquito control. Nassau doesn't have its own independent mosquito control division.

Earlier this week the Nassau County Health Department warned of mosquito-borne diseases in the county. Four horses have tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) in 2018.

“They need their own mosquito control," said Dolores Jones, a mother who lives outside of the Callahan city limits. "Yes, they do."

Amelia Island, Marsh lakes and Piney Island have their own mosquito control district. It only services those areas. It’s funded by an independent tax. With the EEEV cases confirmed, Jones is wondering why she hasn't seen trucks spraying near her home.

“Well that doesn’t make me feel good at all,” said Jones.

Action News Jax took Jones' questions to Nassau County Commissioner Justin Taylor. He said they’re looking at other agencies for help.

“We are aware of the issue, we have been in touch with the health department, with emergency management and the state to try to find a solution,” said Taylor.

Amelia Island Mosquito Control tells Action News Jax they're ready and willing to offer assistance in other parts of the county. Many, like Jones, think it's time for the county to have its own mosquito control agency.

“I think something needs to come to the forefront of the discussion," Jones said.

Jones hopes she sees spray trucks on a consistent basis.

She said water pools on the road leading to her home.

“The area where I live, mosquitoes are bad from the water that’s settled,” said Jones.

The Health Department stresses the importance of dumping out standing water.
