Navy family says moving company lost dozens of belongings during move from Jacksonville

A Navy family who moved away from Jacksonville this summer says the moving company the military hired for them lost dozens of their belongings.

Action News Jax has been reporting on a wide range of recent problems local military families have had with several moving companies that are getting paid with your tax dollars.

“Other military families, you’re not alone. It’s very hard,” said Navy wife Traci Mayes.

After five years in Jacksonville, Mayes moved her two kids and two dogs from the northside to Naval Station Great Lakes in Chicago – all while her husband was deployed.

The military hired Illinois-based Shur-Way Moving to pack, store and deliver their belongings.
But two crates didn't show up, including her 6-year-old's bedroom set.

“I bought my son a brand-new bed. It took me six hours to build. I do remember surprising him. And the moment that he told me, he goes, ‘Oh my gosh, Mom, I don’t have to sleep on the floor anymore?’ That just broke my heart,” said Mayes.

Nearly two months later, one missing crate showed up. Mayes said her son’s bedroom set was damaged.

She said a crate containing priceless sentimental items is still missing.

“I had pictures of the kids when they were born in the hospital, their hospital bracelets, birth announcements, those are all gone,” said Mayes.

Shur-Way Moving Long Distance Operations Manager Eric Brzezinski said workers are searching 17-hundred vaults to find it.

“It was a simple mistake. The warehouse accidentally forgot to mark the boxes and they’re not showing up in the warehouse facility. So, the items are here,” said Brzezinski.

Brzezinski told Action News Jax this has not been a problem with any other moves this summer.
"I just want my stuff back," said Mayes.

In the meantime, all she can do is wait and hope her precious memories turn up.
