Radar imagery from Miami and Melbourne shows the center of Nicole has made landfall on the east coast of the Florida peninsula on North Hutchinson Island just south of Vero Beach. The maximum sustained winds are estimated to be 75 mph (120 km/h), and the minimum central pressure is estimated to be 981 mb (28.97 inches).

Hurricane Nicole has made landfall as a category 1 storm just south of Vero Beach. This is the second latest hurricane landfall for the US behind Kate (1985) and the latest hurricane landfall on record for the east coast of Florida.

Nicole has strengthened to Hurricane Category 1 status. The sprawling storm became a hurricane as it slammed into Grand Bahama, having made landfall just hours earlier on Great Abaco island as a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

Nicole is the first storm to hit the Bahamas since Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 storm that devastated the archipelago in 2019.

Tropical storm force winds extended as far as 485 miles (780 kilometers) from the center in some directions.

Nicole is bringing dangerous storm surges and strong winds to Grand Bahama Island, according to the latest information from the National Hurricane Center.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for The Abacos; Berry Islands; Grand Bahama Island in the northwestern Bahamas; Boca Raton to the Flagler/Volusia County Line Florida.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Bimini in the northwestern Bahamas; Hallandale Beach to Boca Raton; Flagler/Volusia County Line to South Santee River, South Carolina; North of Bonita Beach to Indian Pass Florida; Lake Okeechobee.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Hallandale Beach to Boca Raton; Lake Okeechobee.

Due to Tropical Storm Nicole, Waste Management will suspend collection service Thursday, November 10. Collection service resumption schedules will vary by City and County.

Nassau County: Thursday customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.

Baker County: Thursday customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.

Camden County: Thursday customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.

City of Jacksonville: Thursday customers will be serviced on Saturday, and Friday customers will be serviced as normal.

City of Jacksonville Beach: Thursday garbage and yard waste customers will receive service on their next regularly scheduled collection day. Thursday recycling customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.

Clay County: Thursday customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.

St. Johns County: Thursday customers will be serviced on Saturday, and Friday customers will be serviced as normal.

Clay County has made the following changes ahead of Nicole:

  • Emergency Operations Call Center is ready to answer storm-related questions at 877-252-9362
  • Evacuation orders have been issued for Evacuation Zone A. The Evacuation Zone Helper can identify if your address is located in an evacuation zone http://public.claycountygov.com/evaczone/
  • Sandbags will be available starting Wednesday, from 8AM- 5PM. We will continue to offer bags until they are gone or if it becomes unsafe for our employees to be in the conditions. The county will refill the sites as needed. Ten bags per person. You can pick up sandbags at the following locations until supplies run out:
    • 4387 Lakeshore Dr.
    • 25 Roderigo Avenue
    • City Hall for bags at 555 South Lawrence Blvd.
    • Keystone Heights Cemetery for sand on State RD 100
    • 1086 Fromhart Street
  • Special Needs Shelter opens at 2 p.m. on Wednesday: Lake Asbury Junior High School, 2851 Sandridge Rd. Green Cove Springs, FL 32043
  • General Population shelters will open at 6 PM on Wednesday, November 9th at the following locations: Keystone Heights High School – Pet Friendly, Orange Park High School – Pet Friendly
  • All county offices, including the County Administration Building, the Courthouse, the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency services and libraries will be closed Thursday and will remain closed through Friday.
  • Trash pickup is delayed Thursday and will resume on Friday. Rosemary Hill will be open Friday and Saturday, weather permitting.

Duval County has made the following changes ahead of Nicole:

  • State of Emergency begins at midnight
  • City offices closed through Veteran’s Day
  • Waste pickup suspended Thursday and will resume Friday. Makeup day for Thursday pickups are Saturday.
  • Legends Center and Landmark Middle School are pet-friendly shelters that open Wednesday.
  • JSO is fully staffed and ready to go. The agency is monitoring the bridge conditon.

Nassau County and Union County schools closing Thursday through Veteran’s Day. This includes all after school activities.

St. Johns County suspends waste pickup on Thursday. Residents originally scheduled for Thursday collection will have service on Saturday, Nov. 12. St. Johns County encourages residents to secure all garbage and recycling containers for the duration of the storm. The Tillman Ridge and Stratton Road Transfer Stations will also be closed on Nov. 10.

Walt Disney World theme park officials announced that it will have a phased closure on Wednesday and into Thursday due to Tropical Storm Nicole. See details from park officials below:

  • Walt Disney World Resort theme parks will have a phased closure today, Nov. 9, beginning at 5 p.m. and will remain closed through tomorrow morning, Nov. 10. Resort Guests are encouraged to enjoy food and beverage options at the theme parks prior to returning to their Disney Resort hotel. Theme parks will likely not reopen at their regularly scheduled time tomorrow, Nov. 10.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Closing today, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. with last dining reservations at 5 p.m.
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Closing today, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. with last dining reservations at 6 p.m.
  • Magic Kingdom Park: Closing today, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. Last dining reservations for Be Our Guest, Liberty Tree Tavern, Diamond Horseshoe and Cinderella’s Royal Table will be at 6 p.m., and last dining for all other dining reservations will be at 6:30 p.m.
  • EPCOT: Closing today, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. Last dining reservations for Monsieur Paul, Space 220 Restaurant, Akershus Royal Banquet Hall and Garden Grill Restaurant will be at 6 p.m., and last dining for all other dining reservations will be at 6:30 p.m.

Extended evening theme park hours at Magic Kingdom will be canceled today, Nov. 9, and nighttime spectaculars will be canceled today, Nov. 9, including Disney Enchantment at Magic Kingdom Park, Harmonious at EPCOT, and Fantasmic! at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Jacksonville Agricultural Fair will close Wednesday and Thursday. It will reopen Friday at 3 p.m. and continue regular hours on Saturday.

DCPS will be closed on Thursday. Additionally, athletics activities, extracurricular activities and afterschool activities are canceled for Thursday and will be rescheduled.

Additionally, all FSCJ campuses, administrative offices and centers will be closed Thursday through Veteran’s Day. All classes and activities are cancelled.

Lake City cancelled it’s Veteran’s Day parade on Friday.

St. Johns County has made the following changes ahead of Nicole:

  • Government offices will close Wednesday at noon and remain closed through Veteran’s Day.
  • Public libraries will close Wednesday at noon and remain closed through Veteran’s Day.
  • St. Johns County Schools and district offices will remain open on Wednesday with regular early dismissal. Extended day services will operate as usual. There will be no afterschool activities, events or athletics. Schools and district offices will close through Veteran’s Day.
  • St. Johns County Council on Aging Sunshine Bus service will be suspended Thursday, Nov. 10, for the duration of the weather event. For Sunshine Bus updates, please visit www.sunshinebus.net or call customer service at 904-209-3716.

  • Shelters will be opening at 4 pm
  • County offices will be closing at 3 pm

  • A storm surge watch means there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from thecoastline, in the indicated locations during the next 48 hours.
