Nomadic theater company ‘The 5 & Dime' gets permanent home downtown

A roaming local theater company now has permanent home in downtown Jacksonville.

It's a move that signals more opportunities for the arts in the urban core.

After a few renovations, five store fronts on East Adams Street will be transformed into a permanent home for historically nomadic theater company The 5 & Dime.

“Some places haven’t had an air conditioner, some places don’t have dressing rooms,” said The 5 & Dime managing director Lee Hamby.

The 5 & Dime’s most recent performance was at a downtown warehouse.

“The Cummer Museum, CoRK, MOSH, MOCA, all those places were really wonderful to us,” said Hamby.

Hamby said this move shows the theater’s commitment to enriching the arts in the urban core.

“With visual arts, it’s a huge thing here, with all the murals and things like that. So that’s why I firmly believe that all arts need to be in this area,” said Hamby.

While there are local community theaters by our beaches, in San Marco and more, Hamby said downtown has long been overlooked.

“We do have the Times Union Center, the Florida Theatre that bring in acts. But we just haven’t had anything here that was homegrown and utilized local talent,” said Hamby.

The theater has a six-show line-up for 2017, and also plans to invite other groups and artists to rent the space.
