A special dedication Saturday honored one of the men who helped build the city.

Community members gathered on the Northside as the city dedicated a portion of Blossom Drive to Walter H. Matthews.

The Edward Waters College alum is the first African-American contractor bonded to work for the city.

Among his achievements is building fire station number 36 in the 1960s which is still in use today.

His family told Action News they hope Saturday’s dedication will inspire good works in a community riddled with crime.
