Woman seriously injured at dangerous intersection in Southside Estates, witnesses say

A woman was thrown from a truck in a crash at a dangerous Jacksonville intersection, neighbors say.

A truck and SUV were badly damaged after the accident at Cortez Road and Bradley Road just before 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Debra Powell tells Action News Jax she found a woman badly injured in a ditch after she was thrown from the truck.

"She was bleeding," Powell said. "She could not hardly catch her breath. I went in got her a blanket."

Powell said she put a blanket over her and waited for emergency responders.

"I don't even know if she is going to live," Powell said. "I don't know if the other people in the other car are going to live but something has got to be done."

Powell said she's lived in the area for 15 years and serious crashes have become routine.

"It's just heartbreaking and they're not going to do nothing until somebody dies," she said.

In April, Action News Jax told you a school bus crashed into a tree at the same intersection.

Police said a car ran a stop sign and caused the bus to veer off the road.

In July, another crash at the intersection damaged a neighbor's mailbox, fence and SUV.

Several neighbors have told us very few drivers follow the 30 mile per hour speed limit on Cortez Road.

"We've had 40, 50 miles per hour," Powell said. "When they want to pass on the double-sided lines, they're going 60, 70 miles per hour. It's like a racetrack."

Powell says police have monitored the area and ticketed speeders in the past but the issue remains.

She said she doesnt know how much more scenes like this she can take in her own front yard.

"Its very heartbreaking," Powell said. "You go to their vehicle, you don't know if they're dead. You don't know if they're alive."

In July, the City of Jacksonville said it was aware of the issues was working to address the concerns.

Powell says she and other neighbors have made several phone calls about their concerns and feel they are not receiving any help.
