Construction worker hit, killed by street sweeper in St. Johns County

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — A 69-year-old construction worker was killed after he was struck by a street sweeper Friday morning in St. Johns County, officials said.

Everett Rolfe was flagging traffic at State Road 207 and Morrison Road and had his back turned to the street sweeper when he was hit.

He was dragged by the street sweeper, which stopped with him underneath it.

The St. Johns County Fire Rescue Department came to the scene but Rolfe died from his injuries.

Rolfe was from Holly Hill, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

He was working for Pacesetter Personnel Services and several witnesses told Action News Jax that he was hard of hearing so he may not have heard the truck coming.

All lanes of SR 207 were closed for approximately 3 hours because of the accident.

The road opened at about 1 p.m.

An OSHA representative said a compliance officer went to the scene of the incident and is investigating.
