Officials said device found at Putnam landfill is shrapnel shell

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office is responding to the Putnam County Central Landfill in Palatka just off U.S. 17, where a worker found a military ordnance around 5 p.m. Monday.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — Officials are investigating a shrapnel shell found at a landfill Monday in Putnam County.

Officials responded around 5 p.m. to the Putnam County Central Landfill in Palatka when an employee spotted the device.

The officials checked with military personnel, and did an X-ray of the device to confirm that it was a shrapnel shell, which contained shrapnel. The device did not have a fuse to detonate it, said the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

The device was moved to a remote location where officials around 10:45 p.m. detonated it.

It has not known who left the device.
