Plans in the works to demolish Metropolitan Park canopy

Action News Jax has learned about there are plans to demolish the stage's canopy at Metropolitan Park, months after the stage was determined to be unsafe.

The City Council still has to approve this plan. Right now, they don't know how much this would cost.
The city said it did several reviews to figure out the structural integrity of the facility and said the canopy can't be fixed.

The stage was closed months ago, just before The Big Ticket. An inspection report then deemed the stage unsafe for use.

We got pictures from the report that found there were rusted steel, rotted gutters and corroded cables.

At the last minute, organizers had to put up a temporary stage. We have learned the city plans to reimburse organizers nearly $100,000 for that if it's approved by council. The stage will still have a restricted use.

We asked Councilman Tommy Hazouri if the city has the money to keep the park going.

“I think eventually we'll do something and we just need to make sure we have the dollars and right now, we can't do a lot. I wish we could multi task, we're just depending on our sales tax is coming in,” Hazouri said.

Right now there is no time table on this.
