Police chief to bring skate park to St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Lauren Canoura has been skating for about six years.

“I've been really involved with the skate community around St. Augustine because it's pretty small,” said Canoura.

She says that’s why she was excited to learn that the chief of the St. Augustine Beach Police Department was pushing for a new skate park to be built.

The St. Augustine Beach Police public information officer says a skate park committee has been formed.

Canoura has been to the meetings. She says in those meetings, the chief of police talked about why a new skate park was so important.

The current park, Hamilton Upchurch State Park, is a few miles north of the beach and can be difficult for those living at the beach to get to.

“He was like, you know what? Why not have a place where they can be so we can keep an eye on them and they won't bother other people in the community,” said Canoura.

Canoura says the talk as of now is to build the new park at Ron Parker Memorial Recreational Park.

We drove there from the current park, and saw it was much closer to neighborhoods at the beach.

She believes the new park would help keep kids off the roads and other places they aren't allowed to skate.

Community leaders and local skaters say there is a push to raise money for the skate park through donations.
