Police: Man accused of killing mother faced 17 mental evaluations

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man accused of killing his mother at an apartment in Regency had been held for mental evaluations more than a dozen times.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Assistant Chief of Investigations Chris Butler announced Thursday morning the arrest of 28-year-old Henry Harriford in connection with the slaying of his mother, 59-year-old Janette Harriford.

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon on Monument Road at the Woodcreek Apartments.

JSO said Henry Harriford confessed to suffocating his mother.

JSO said the suspect has been held for mental evaluations under the Baker Act 17 times, and the mother had an injunction for protection against her son.

Police are now waiting on the Medical Examiner to confirm the cause of death.
