Fights continue at Oceanway Middle School

A student’s cellphone video captured the fight of two teens throwing punches, shoving and saying racial slurs to each other.

This is another Oceanway Middle School brawl. However, Duval County Public Schools investigated this particular fight and found it was staged. Gail Benedicto’s daughter attends this middle school and it’s hard for her to watch this grueling video.

“Honestly, this is why my daughter isn’t going to First Coast (High School), I mean, I’m putting her in one of the magnet high schools. She sees fights here all the time,” Benedicto said.

Action News Jax has been covering many fight investigations at this school. An incident happened two months ago in the cafeteria. School leaders said the day after the fight, students wore either white or black shirts, only adding to the racial tensions.

“You hate to see children have so much violence inflicted upon each other and by their own hands. It’s shocking,” said Benedicto.

Duval County Public Schools said they're working on combating the problem. This year, Oceanway Middle School was rolled into a new Non-Violence Project. That is a 5-year, $15 million program that provides mental health counselors to work with students with behavior and academic problems. As fights continue to break out, school leaders said parents also need to advise their children how to act.

“I think it needs to start at home. That’s your biggest thing that the parents have to get involved and make it unacceptable,” Benedicto said.

In the last 36 days, school administrators said there have been five fights at Oceanway Middle School.
