GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A man is in jail after a Gainesville police officer caught him reportedly raping a student.
An exchange student from the Netherlands told police that she was sexually battered early Sunday morning.
The student told police that she met Jarrod Roberts in Midtown then rode on his scooter to his house around 2 a.m. Sunday.
She says Roberts asked her to have unprotected sex and she refused. She says he insulted her, and she felt scared and nervous because of his behavior.
She left his house, but realized she left her cellphone there.
Roberts convinced her to walk back to his house to look for the phone. Along the walk, she realized they were not heading back to Roberts’ house.
Roberts grabbed her and pulled her into a secluded driveway of the old Gainesville Regional Utilities administrative building.
She screamed and Roberts choked her. He forced her to have sex with him, said police.
An officer drove by and saw the rape happening.
Roberts ran away and left the student there. The police report says that he lost his shoes while running away.
When an officer found Roberts, he admitted to meeting a girl in Midtown and bringing her back to his house. Roberts said that the girl left her cellphone at his home, but that he could not find it.
Then, Roberts handed police a pair of underwear and said they belonged to the girl.
The student positively identified Roberts in a lineup.
