The U.S. Naval Institute said the missile exploded shortly after launching and a small fire broke out on the port side of the ship. Sailors reacted promptly, fighting the fire. A spokesman from Mayport said the debris from that explosion caused damage to the ship.

The USS The Sullivans has been at sea away from Mayport for a while. An investigation into why the missile malfunctioned is underway.

According to the U.S. Naval Institute, it's too early to tell if this will affect the ship's schedule.
