STORY: Sailor's disappearance remains under investigation
The Putnam County sailor who was found hiding on a U.S. Navy ship is now facing a court-martial, the Stars and Stripes reported on Monday.
Peter Mims was feared dead when he was discovered missing off the coast of Japan on the U.S. Navy cruiser USS Shiloh.
His shipmates were in the process of planning a memorial service for Mims, the Stars and Stripes reported.
The Shiloh crew even continued searching the ship after surface and air searches were canceled, and the crew was in the process of planning a memorial service for Mims when he was found in the ship’s engineering room, according to Navy statements.
The Navy launched a massive search that turned up no sign of the missing sailor.
Mims was found in the ship’s engineering spaces a week later and reportedly turned himself in to shipmates.
The ongoing investigation is expected to conclude by late summer.
Mims enlisted in the Navy in February 2014 and reported to the Shiloh in August of that year.
