CLAY COUNTY, Fla — A Clay County woman is warning people about a secret shopper scam after she got something in the mail that seemed too good to be true.
A check for $3,519.66 was mailed directly to Stephanie Shaver's home. It said it was for her to use as a secret shopper.
"That's a lot of money to shop with." Shaver said. "It's very tempting."
The instructions said to deposit the check into her account within two days and then buy $3,000 worth of prepaid gift cards. The sender said to put those gift cards in the mail. Her cut of the deal would be $595. It was easy and tempting, but felt off, she said.
"The red flag was I never applied for a secret shopper job." Shaver said. But, she had applied for several jobs in the last month. "I had applied for jobs online, and I guess cookies were enabled, and they got my information."
#ReportScam named it one of the top scams of 2019. In a January article, the Better Business Bureau said, "It sounds cool, until it's a scam."
"It's very tempting, because it was a legit check," Shaver said.
