Sentencing date set for parents convicted in daughter's beating death

Jada Norfleet

The sentencing date has been set for a father and stepmother who were found guilty in the death of their 4-year-old daughter.

On Monday, a sentencing date was set for former Andrew Jackson High School teacher John Norfleet and his wife Shavonn Norfleet. The Norfleets are set to be sentenced on Thursday, April 7 at 1:30 p.m. and they both could be spending the rest of their lives in prison.

The two were found guilty in the death of 4-year-old Jada Norfleet. She died in January 2015 after being beaten with a plank of wood for not finishing her chicken nuggets, officials say.

Police say the 4-year-old was beaten with a plank of wood until she went into cardiac arrest.

John and Shavonn Norfleet were both charged in Jada’s killing. They both pleaded not guilty to their charges.

At one point, John Norfleet wrote a jailhouse letter requesting that his wife be exonerated of all charges.

The Norfleets were both charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and manslaughter of a child. In March, John Norfleet was found guilty of all three charges and Shavonn Norfleet was found guilty of aggravated child abuse and manslaughter of a child.

John Norfleet faces a mandatory life sentence and Shavonn Norfleet faces up to 60 years behind bars.
