Shooter in Palatka murder-suicide identified

Johnny Stephenodonta Kemp, 30, shot Detret Burley and Travis Hall, then turned the gun on himself, in the parking lot of the Corky Bells Restaurant, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — The Putnam County Sheriff's Office has confirmed the identity of the shooter in the murder-suicide that happened in East Palatka Wednesday.

Deputies learned from witnesses that Johnny Stephenodonta Kemp, 30, shot Detret Burley and Travis Hall, as they drove into the parking lot of the Corky Bell's Restaurant.

Witnesses told police that Kemp then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life.

Investigators say Kemp found out Hall and Burley would be together at the restaurant and went to confront them.

Deputies believe Burley was trying to end a relationship with Kemp. They believe jealousy was Kemp's motive for the shooting.

Action News dug into Kemp's past and discovered court records that go back to 2001.

Charges range from driving without a license, robbery with a firearm, obstructing an officer, battery and resisting an officer without violence, all of which were dropped.

Kemp was adjudicated guilty in 2008 for carrying a concealed weapon, in 2009 for trespassing and criminal mischief and in 2010 for driving on a suspended license.

We also discovered domestic violence and repeat violence injunctions were filed against Kemp by two women in April of 2010 and in 2013 by Burley, according to court records. All of those injunctions were denied.
