Shooting in vehicle in Union County kills 61-year-old man

The Union County Sheriff's Office is responding to an incident at CVS Pharmacy with the Union County Fire Department.

UNION COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies are investigating a deadly shooting over the weekend in Union County.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said a shooting happened on March 5 at about 4:30 p.m. between two occupants in a vehicle near the intersection of CR796 and CR796A.

Deputies said the shooting occurred in a red four-door Chrysler.

Deputies arrived and immediately started life-saving measures on the victim, James Ray Forsyth, 61, of Lake Butler. Forsyth was shot once and died from his injuries.

Deputies arrested Thomas Wayne Powell Jr., 38, of Lake Butler on charges of possession of a firearm by convicted felon. He is being held on a $250,000 bond.

Further charges are pending in the investigation.

“This is a very unfortunate incident and our thoughts and prayers go out to the Forsyth family, said Union County Sheriff Brad Whitehead.

Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Investigators are assisting the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
