ST. JOHNS, Fla. — During a budget workshop by St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners this week, Office of Management and Budget Director Wade Schroeder announced the pause of some capital projects before the property tax amendment vote in November.
“We have over $100 million in CIPs that we have identified that are currently in some level of pause until we know the outcome of what our future revenue sources are,” said Schroeder.
One of the projects put on pause is construction on Fire Station 23 in the Beachwalk area.
“If the station is paused then the positions are paused as well,” said Schroeder.
“It can potentially be a concern depending on response times and what not,” said Beachwalk resident Wyland Szabo. “I am currently not concerned about it.”
Szabo has lived in Beachwalk for three years. He currently rents. We asked him if halting the fire station construction will impact how he votes in November.
“Honestly ‘no.’ I don’t think so. I think I’m still all for eliminating property taxes,” said Szabo. “I don’t think it would sway me one way or the other.”
We reached out to the St. Johns County Fire Rescue department for a statement. They referred us to the county. We reached out to the county and they are working on getting us a response.
