Small plane crashes in Lowe's parking lot in Palatka

PALATKA, Fla. — A small plane with two men on board crash-landed in the parking lot of a Lowe's Home Improvement store in Palatka Friday morning.

The pilot told investigators he tried to gain altitude from a touch-and-go landing at Kay Larking Airport when the engine stalled.

The 2008 Cessna 400 plane fell and hit the embankment of a retention pond before coming to rest in the store's parking lot.

The Florida Highway Patrol identified the pilot as 73-year-old Richard Carrara from Palm Coast, and the passenger as 71-year-old Malcolm Clevenstine.

Cararra is hospitalized at UF Health in Gainesville with incapacitating injuries. Clevenstine is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
