Special Olympics Torch Icon Campaign at Publix now through Jan. 13!

Special Olympics and Publix Supermarkets are teaming up for the annual Torch Icon Campaign in stores now through Jan. 13.

Special Olympics empowers people with intellectual disabilities by helping them conquer their sporting goals. Karen Prewitt stopped by the Action News Jax studios to talk about the campaign and the way Special Olympics is helping local children in our area - including her own.

"We service about 1,500 athletes throughout the county and offer 15 sports throughout the year," said Karen Prewitt, Special Olympics advocate and volunteer. "Proceeds from this campaign benefit our athletes, everything from equipment to uniforms to transportation - it's such a huge help."

"At Publix, our mission is to be involved as responsible citizens within our communities," said Maria Brous, Publix director of media and community relations. "We are proud to be an employer of choice among more than 800 Special Olympic athletes across our seven-state operating area."

You can support our local Special Olympics society by donating at any local Publix Supermarkets store. Everyone who contributes to the campaign will receive $14 in coupon savings.
