Capsized boat near Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Update 6:15 p.m.: Three people escaped a sinking boat near Downtown St. Augustine Monday afternoon. Several witnesses told Action News Jax they saw them hanging on to the capsized boat in the water near the Bridge of Lions.

“I look over and see the bottom of a boat, three people kind of hanging on to it. One guy’s got his bag, he’s swimming to shore,” Christopher Dean said.

The St. Augustine Police Department said all three people made it to shore safely. No one was hurt.

Police assisted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as they secured the boat. FWC told Action News Jax they are working to find what caused the boat to capsize in the water.

“It was a shocker,” Dean said. “You don’t really see that, especially in St. Augustine. I’ve heard about things like that happening, but it seems like a very calm day, the waters is not too reckless. So I don’t really understand why it happened.”

Original story: Action News Jax’s Skycam near the Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine showed a capsized boat with several Florida Wildlife Commission and Sheriff’s Deputies responding Monday around noon.

The St. Augustine Police Department told Action News Jax three people that were onboard the boat are back on land and safe.

They don’t know why the boat capsized.
