Name, colors for new St. Johns County high school announced

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Update 12/8/2020: The St. Johns County School board has announced the name for St. Johns County’s High School “HHH” Tuesday morning.

The name of the high school will be Tocoi Creek High School.

The school is named after the site of Timucuan village is within the school zone on the St. Johns River.

The school colors will be burnt orange, black, and gunmetal grey.

We are still waiting for the school board to announce the school mascot.

Original Story 12/7/2020 The St. Johns County high school currently under construction and only known as “HHH” will get a new name and mascot on Tuesday.

The choices for the school’s name have been narrowed down to 6:

1. Ancient City High School – Reference to St. Augustine.

2. Nine Mile High School – Reference to the previously named Nine Mile Road, currently International Golf Parkway, that was named after the spring that was called Nine Mile Spring.

3. North River High School – The Tolomato Indians lived “on the river north of St. Augustine”, hence the name of North River.

4. River Valley High School – Reference to John and William Bartram when they described the area in northern Florida as the “St. Johns River Valley”.

5. Tocoi or Tocoi Creek High School – The site of Timucuan village is within the HHH school zone on the St. Johns River. Eventually turned into a Spanish Mission, steamboat port and railway station for commerce and tourism for St. Augustine. Tocoi Creek also resides within HHH school zone.

6. Tolomato High School – Name of the Yamassee Indian village north of St. Augustine at the headwaters of North River or Tolomato River.

HHH will open for the 2021-2022 school year. High School HHH Principal Jay Willets facilitated a community survey and two community meetings to solicit input on potential names for High School HHH.

The first community meeting was held on October 6, 2020, and opened with a discussion of historical information on the community. There were 135 participants in the virtual meeting. The community meeting was followed by a community survey asking for suggestions on school names, school colors and school mascots.

The survey resulted in 572 responses. A second community meeting was held on October 20, 2020, followed by a second community survey with 273 responses.

  • Cyclones
  • Hornets
  • Hurricanes
  • Longhorns
  • Moccasins
  • Razorbacks
  • Tigers
  • Toros
  • Vikings
  • Vipers
