Chandler Stiles, a senior at Stanton College Preparatory School in Jacksonville, has been appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

According to USNA, about 5,000 candidates receive nominations a year, but only about 1,400 actually receive an appointment, or invite to attend the academy.

U.S. Rep Al Lawson, who serves Florida’s 5th Congressional District, told Action News Jax Stiles was one of his nominees for the academy.

“Chandler is a marvelous young man who cares about his community,” Rep. Lawson said. “His dedication is an inspiration to all who want to further their education at one of our nation’s top military academies. I wish him continued success in his career.”

Stiles attended the U.S. Naval Academy’s Summer STEM camp and the U.S. Naval Academy’s Summer Seminar and it was then he knew he wanted to work as a mechanical engineer.

“I strive to become a mechanical engineer and develop vehicles and machinery for the military,” Stiles said. “The leadership skills, knowledge and physical ability that the Naval Academy provides for its Midshipmen is the finest out there. As a naval officer, I would be able to serve my country in an effective way and do the best I possibly could for my country.”

Those selected to attend a service academy must serve in the military for at least five years upon graduation.

Stiles isn’t the first of his family to serve in the Navy. According to Lawson, Stiles will be following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and uncle.

Stiles holds a 4.57 GPA and is the co-captain of Stanton’s varsity baseball team.

He is a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Spanish Society and Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society.
