Student brings airsoft pistol to Jacksonville elementary school

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A student brought an airsoft pistol to a Jacksonville elementary school on Thursday morning, according to a the school's principal.

Garden City Elementary School Principal Mychelle Grover said in a call to parents that the student brought the weapon to the extended day program before school "and was showing it to students."

The airsoft pistol is a prohibited item, Grover said, and disciplinary consequences will be administered according to the Duval County Public Schools code of conduct.

Here is the text of the call from Grover:

"Hello Parents and Guardians of Garden City. This is Principal Grover calling. As you know, I want to keep you fully informed of anything that happens on campus that might concern you as a parent, and this call is in that category.

"This morning, before school in our extended day program, one of our students brought an airsoft pistol to school and was showing it to other students.

"This is a prohibited item, and items such as this should never be brought to school. Disciplinary consequences will be administered according to the code of conduct, but I also want to use this situation to remind everyone to please monitor might be in your children's backpack.

"Thankfully, no one was injured and working together, we can ensure that Garden City remains a safe and productive environment for our students. I appreciate your partnership toward that effect.

"If you have any questions or input regarding anything at Garden City, do not hesitate to contact me at the school. Thank you for your attention and have a great rest of your day."
