Student detained after stabbing at Jacksonville middle school

LOCAL NEWS: Fleming Island High School football player in critical condition 

A student was stabbed during a fight at Lake Shore Middle School on Tuesday, officials said.

The student was taken to the hospital and a second student was detained.

Police are on scene investigating.

Duval County Public Schools released a statement about the stabbing.

Good Evening Parents and Guardian of Lake Shore Middle School. This is Principal Caleb Gottberg calling to notify you of a serious incident that took place this afternoon. School administrators were alerted to a student who received a stab wound as a result of a physical altercation. The student was immediately transported to receive medical care and school police secured the scene. A student has been detained and law enforcement is actively investigating this situation. While this is an isolated incident, we have security protocols in place and are taking this situation very seriously as student safety is our top priority. A letter will be sent home with your child on Wednesday. If you have any questions, please contact me at (904) 381-7440.

Parent Sierra Harrell said her daughter used to go to Lake Shore Middle School, but is now homeschooled.

"She was being threatened, bullied, harassed," Harrell said.

As police continue to investigate, Action News Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson has a message for parents and their students.

"Don't run into the fight. Run for help so no one can get hurt, especially you," Jefferson said.
