A band playing in Jacksonville on Thursday is working on connecting with the deaf and hard of hearing community. For the first time, they’re going to stream an event online for those who are hearing impaired.
Oticon, Inc. is teaming up with classic rock band Styx for a live concert broadcast for fans wearing the Oticon Opn Internet-connected hearing aid. This broadcast is exclusively for customers, which will enable them to stream the heart-pumping sounds of an in-person concert directly to their hearing aids.

The music and technology industries are merging to make accommodations so deaf and hard of hearing fans can also enjoy concerts. Audiologist Patti Shelly-Lohman told us bands like Styx are giving fans the opportunity to engage in new ways.
“I think this is a great opportunity for those who aren’t able to go to a Styx concert,” Shelly-Lohman said.
As part of their summer tour, the band's performance from the PNC Bank Arts Center in New Jersey will be delivered directly to hearing aid wearers across the country, allowing them to enjoy the show from the comfort of their own home.
“For music lovers, I think they always strive to hear music better or like they remember – especially if it’s someone who has a hearing loss later in life,” Shelly-Lohman said.

Through Oticon Opn, fans wearing these hearing aids will sync with a live feed of the concert so they can experience the music anywhere. Just like how their devices pair with their phones -- it’s the same concept that will be used on a website to hear the band.
“You can pair a cellphone, iPad, it actually streams the data right to the instrument and you hear right into the hearing aid,” Shelly-Lohman said.
Styx will be performing at Daily's Place in Jacksonville on Thursday. Meanwhile, this streamed event for hearing aid wearers launches on Aug. 22.
